SFO already has a name, Mills Field, don't know much of the history of why or when. The Mills Family used to live in Millbrae, they also had a flying club on a private airstrip near the family home. The Navy flew planes out of here until WW2, then the navy decided to swap land with San Francsico. Navy got Treasure Island, San Francisco got Mills Field and the rest is history

Why not just call it Harvey Milk Field at San Francisco International Airport. It will always be called SFO, the name Mills is mostly used by older people that worked in the airline industry. My grandparents use to call it Mills.

San Francisco Airport or with International Airport, Harvey Milk San Francisco International Airport, it will always be SFO.

Oh by the way Norman Mineta is know in San Jose, was born there, spent some of his youth in a internment camp, served in the army, came back from UCB, was a city council member and the 59th mayor of San Jose.

This is BAD politically correct garbage of the foolish non-common sense type that has become typical in San Francisco. Remember Army Street

"I suspect it will get about 70 percent of the vote." The vote, if it makes it to the ballot, will probably be much closer than that. I don't see the Marina crowd, Asian Americans, or African Americans voting for this name change in large numbers. (Or even Castro residents, for that matter.)

There seems to be a lot of opposition to this idea, for a wide variety of reasons. If folks didn't want to name a sewage plant after Bush, it stands to reason that they may not want to name the airport for Milk, or anyone else for that matter.

For those not aware of the background of the murder of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone in 1978 by Supervisor Dan White, a little history about the event is worth knowing. When one remembers the actions by Harvey Milk that proceeded his murder, the late Harvey Milk does not come out looking so good IMO.

Sup. White and his wife ran a retail shop at Pier 39 I believe. That was their main source of income. The salary for a supe then was a lot less than now (inflation-adjusted). Sup. White was having financial difficulties and had told taken some action towards resigning his supe position so that he could put more energy toward his retail business and overcome his family's financial difficulties (he also had kids he and his wife had to support).

I don't recall the exact details but he may have submitted his resignation (he must have or else Moscone wouldn't have had the power to prevent him from staying a supe).

Shortly thereafter, he decided he wanted to rescind his resignation and asked Mayor Moscone to re-appoint him. Sup. Milk put pressure on Moscone to not give White his supe position back. I think this was a really slimeball thing to do by Milk considering White had resigned for financial reasons because his small biz was not doing great and the supe salary was pretty low then.

Of course Milk's actions or Moscone's were no justification for Dan White to murder them for what they did to him but despite being murdered, Harvey Milk's actions towards Dan White in pressuring Moscone to not give White his job back when he won it fare and square was, as I said, pretty slimy.

Just because he was the first openly gay person to be a SF supe is no reason to name SFO or anything else that is public property after him or Moscone.

Moscone no longer looks very heroic either from the viewpt of 2013 as it's recently been revealed he was using his position as SF Mayor to do favors for the Rev. Jim Jones - murderer of 800 or so ppl in Guyana - by appointing him to City positions so that Jim Jones would provide Mr. Moscone African-American women from the People's Temple (Jones' church) so that Mr. Moscone could have sex with them - despite Moscone being married and the father of three, I believe, high school age children.

So I don't want any airport or any other public property named after Harvey Milk or George Moscone (or Dan White) in the future. From the viewpt of 2013, Mr. Milk or Mr. Moscone don't look very honorable to me. Mr. Milk should have kept his mouth shut regarding Mr. White's supe position for Mr. White was the one chosen by the ppl of that supe district and a decent man wouldn't have kicked Dan White when he was down because his small business was having financial difficulties. Like I said, Harvey Milk should have STFU and Moscone should have allowed White to finish his supe term (and should not have been using his position as SF mayor to get sexual favors from Jim Jones).

And beyond that, David Campos also comes off looking like a slimeball in using this move to blatantly increase his chances in getting Tom Ammiano's Assembly seat since Ammiano will be term limited after this term. I hope everyone works hard to prevent Mr. Campos from getting elected to any more positions since this move by him to abuse large public institutions for his own personal gain is also really slimy and reason enough to retire him for good.

I recommend that San Francisco International Airport (SFO) be named after former California State Assembly-person Carol Migden, a hands-on politician who was in-touch with her constituents. The memory of Harvey Milk is too distant (1978) for many of us.
